Establishments subject to authorisation

This section contains information and procedures regarding:

  • the storage and use of materials that emit ionising radiation;
  • the transportation of radioactive substances;
  • the transfer and transit of radioactive sources;
  • the management of spent products;
  • high-activity sources.

Some establishments in Luxembourg store radioactive substances or use equipment that is capable of emitting ionising radiation. These are mainly:

  • hospitals and their nuclear medicine departments;
  • research laboratories;
  • industrial laboratories.

Public and private organisations also use X-ray equipment to carry out checks on, for example, baggage and mail.

There is a wide range of potential uses for radioactive substances:

  • medical treatment and diagnosis;
  • tracers in research;
  • surface analysis;
  • level and thickness controls;
  • non-destructive gammagraphy analysis in industry.
