Employees
For employees working for a private sector employer, it is the employer who completes all the necessary formalities with the Joint Social Security Centre (CCSS) in order to register their employee with the Luxembourg social security system.
Once registration is complete, the employee is covered for the following risks:
- Sickness and maternity: with the National Health Fund (Caisse nationale de santé, CNS)
- Pension: with the National Pension Insurance Fund (Caisse nationale d'assurance pension, CNAP)
- Accidents at work: with the Accident Insurance Association (Association d'assurance accident, AAA)
- Dependency
Once the CCSS has validated the registration, the employee receives a letter confirming their registration with the Luxembourg social security system. They will also receive their social security card.
The family members of an insured person (spouse, partner, children, etc.) can also benefit from Luxembourg social security coverage thanks to the principle of co-insurance.
This means that they can be co-insured free of charge, provided that they do not themselves benefit from compulsory coverage (as an employee or self-employed person, for example).
Persons who may be co-insured generally include:
- the spouse or civil partner;
- children up to the age of 18 (or older in the case of study or disability);
- in certain cases, ascendants living in the insured person's household.
The application for co-insurance must be submitted by the main insured person using a specific form available on the website of the National Health Fund (CNS).
Compulsory medical examination
All newly hired employees must undergo a medical examination at the Occupational Health Service (STM) or the occupational health service specific to their sector, if applicable. This medical examination is mandatory, regardless of the position held, and aims to assess the employee's ability to perform the intended function.
The request for the examination is made by the employer.
