Information concerning the field of veterinary radiology
The commissioning and use of X-ray equipment for veterinary purposes is subject to three conditions:
- The X-ray equipment must be authorised in advance (Art. 44 of the Radiation Protection Act).
- The independent expert has inspected and approved the radiological installation (wall protection, radiation protection equipment, signage, etc.) and the X-ray equipment has been duly authorised in accordance with Art. 53 of the Radiation Protection Act; technical details of this inspection are set out in the annex to the authorisation order.
- Each veterinary surgeon using the X-ray machine complies with the training requirements (6 hours) and continuing professional development requirements (4 hours every 5 years) in the field of radiation protection (Articles 29.2.b and 29.3.b of the Law and Article 13.2 of the Grand Ducal Regulation on Radiation Protection).
Authorisations
- Application form for authorisation to operate a Class III facility for the purpose of veterinary medicine.
Under the heading ‘Professional exposure and public exposure’, a radiation protection calculation determining the protection requirements for walls, slabs and doors in accordance with the guide for radiation protection calculations (PDF, 978 KB) must be attached (in the case of a simple replacement of an authorised X-ray machine, it may be sufficient to attach the acceptance report for the old machine, provided that the location does not change by more than 20 cm and that the high voltage does not increase by more than 10 kV).
(Leave Annex I A blank, as the use of radioactive sources for veterinary medicine is not a justified practice in Luxembourg) – please complete Annex I B:
- under ‘Practice’, please indicate, for example: ‘veterinary radiology – fixed X-ray station’ or, for example: ‘veterinary radiology – portable X-ray machine (X-ray at client's premises)’ or please specify all your practices in more detail by indicating the type of imaging – section ‘Source: mobility’ of the following link: List of existing practices in the field of veterinary medicine (PDF, 141 KB)
External experts (Pdf, 10 Kb) can offer assistance with administrative procedures and radiation protection calculations. The acceptance of radiological installations after installation must be carried out by one of these persons.
Acceptance of the radiological installation
The authorisation allows the installation of the authorised X-ray equipment at the location specified in the application and covers the technical checks carried out by the installer of this equipment, as specified by the manufacturer. Feel free to take advantage of the installer's presence to ask questions about the operation of the X-ray machine, image receiver, image processing and storage software, etc.
Before the first exposure of an animal, an external expert (Pdf, 10 Kb) must carry out an acceptance inspection of the radiological installation (Art. 53 of the law).
Feel free to take advantage of the expert's presence to ask any questions you may have.
Use of the radiological installation
An appendix to the authorisation specifies the general conditions for establishments using X-ray generating equipment in the field of veterinary medicine.
Dosimetric monitoring may be carried out by an authorised dosimetry service (Pdf, 29 Kb).
