Radiation protection advice
The authorisation covers the acquisition of the radiation source, its installation, function and performance checks as stipulated by the manufacturer, acceptance and acceptance testing as provided for below.
No radiation source (e.g. X-ray devices), installation or practice, whether newly introduced or modified, may be implemented without a finding of conformity communicated to the Health Directorate, Radiation Protection Division following an acceptance test as specified in Article 53 of the Law of 28 May 2019 on radiation protection.
No radiological medical equipment may be made operational without an acceptance test as stipulated in Article 102 of the Law.
The following experts may contribute to satisfying these requirements:
- radiation protection expert: their remit is defined in Article 17 of the Law; they provide advice and opinions concerning all aspects of radiation protection (e.g. in the context of Article 19 of the application for authorisation, including, for example, calculations for the protection of walls against radiation, or in the context of the consultations provided for in Articles 63 and 112 of the Law, including, for example, the approval of sources and installations provided for in Article 53 of the law);
- expert in medical physics: their remit is defined in Article 18 of the Law; they give advice and opinions regarding all aspects of medical physics and radiation protection (restricted to the medical sector). All class I and II establishments carrying out practices in which people are exposed for medical purposes must use an expert in medical physics for such aspects as the acceptance test and quality control of medical radiological equipment provided for in Article 102 of the Law;
- radiation protection officer authorised to advise establishments: this role is defined in Article 21 of the Law and the remit is detailed in Article 7 of the Grand Ducal Regulation on radiation protection. This officer may intervene, for example, during acceptance testing and the acceptance of radiological equipment for conventional dental use or veterinary use (class III).

The establishment (operator) of a radiological installation is free to engage whichever expert they choose. The related fees are borne by the establishment.
