Non-compliant anti-choking devices
Safety warning - Anti-choking devices
The Division of Pharmacy and Medicines (Division de la pharmacie et des médicaments - DPM) is aware that a number of 'anti-choking' devices that do not comply with European regulations on medical devices (Regulation 2017/745 on medical devices) are being sold through online platforms and drop-shipping websites. These devices are used to clear the airways of a person who is choking, after first aid has failed or cannot be carried out.
The DPM is warning the public not to purchase counterfeit or unbranded anti-choking devices, as they may be ineffective or even worsen the situation by pushing obstructions even further down the airways, which could be fatal.
Purchasing these devices online – where they are widely available – requires special vigilance. The general public is urged to read the Practical guide: How to identify non-compliant anti-choking devices. (Pdf, 942 Kb)
The DPM works closely with online marketplaces to ensure the withdrawal from sale of non-compliant anti-choking devices. Most of these non-compliant devices are manufactured in and/or shipped from China, are similar or identical in design to the LifeVac anti-choking device and, in some cases, claim to be genuine LifeVac products. All anti-choking devices shipped from China should therefore be treated with caution.
Action to take
- Do not use an anti-choking device if you are unsure about its compliance status
- Check the product carefully, referring to the pictures shown in the Practical guide: How to identify non-compliant anti-choking devices (see download link below)
- Contact the DPM immediately, at meddevices@ms.etat.lu
- Dispose of such devices once identified as counterfeit or non-compliant
- Do not return the device to the vendor, as there is a risk of resale
