Private households

A private household may hire someone to perform household tasks, babysit, assist a dependent person, or host an au pair. In this context, the private household (or host family) becomes the employer and must register the hired person with social security through the Joint Social Security Centre (CCSS).

The main categories of employment are:

  • Household work/childcare
  • Paid carers for a dependent person
  • Informal carers (family or friends, unpaid)
  • Au pairs

Once registered, the person is covered, depending on their status, for various risks such as illness, pension, accident at work and dependency. A social security card is issued after registration.

If the person employed does not yet have a Luxembourg national registration number, the employer must provide a copy of their identity document so that the CCSS can assign one to them.

The end of the employment relationship must also be declared in order to proceed with deregistration. For au pairs, registration ends automatically on the scheduled date.
