Students and trainees

Social security affiliation depends on the type of activity and the status of the student or intern. Here are the main situations :

Internships

A distinction must be made between:

  • Internships that are part of a school or university curriculum, governed by an agreement and which may require affiliation in certain cases
  • Internships outside the school system, which require specific affiliation to social security.

Details of the conditions can be found at: https://ccss.public.lu/fr/particuliers/stagiaires-etudiants.html

If a student of legal age is not covered by compulsory health insurance (either personally or as a family member), the educational institution (accredited secondary or higher education institution, or research centre) must register them with the CCSS (link below).

Working during school holidays

Pupils or students aged between 15 and 27 may work during school holidays, subject to certain conditions:

  • They must be registered with the CCSS by their employer;
  • Coverage applies to accidents at work/while travelling to and from work and occupational illnesses;
  • The total duration of work is limited to 2 months or 346 hours per year.

If the student or intern does not yet have a Luxembourg national registration number (13-digit number), the employer or educational institution must provide a copy of an identity document to enable registration with the CCSS.
