Voluntary insured persons
Individuals who are not covered by a compulsory scheme have the option of taking out voluntary insurance with the Joint Social Security Centre.
Three types of insurance are available
- Health and maternity insurance: This provides continued cover for healthcare and, where applicable, daily allowances in the event of illness. This insurance can be taken out on an optional or continuous basis in order to maintain uninterrupted cover.
- Pension insurance: This aims to maintain or supplement your pension insurance career in order to preserve your rights in relation to retirement, disability or survival. Several options are available, for example a contribution calculated on a full basis or on one third of the minimum social wage.
- Agricultural accident insurance: This covers accidents related to agricultural activities, provided that the farmer has a minimum amount of land. This insurance may be suspended if the required conditions are no longer met.
Contributions for voluntary insurance are calculated on the basis of declared income, agricultural status or other specific criteria.
The CCSS's voluntary insurance schemes (health, pension, agricultural accident) enable everyone to maintain or supplement social protection tailored to their personal situation.
