Law of 24 July 2014
In July 2014, a law was passed in Luxembourg which sets out all of a patient’s rights and obligations in a single text. It also clarifies the relationship between patients and healthcare providers.
The purpose of this law is to promote trust, transparency and good collaboration between patients and their healthcare providers.
Such collaboration must be grounded in the fundamental principles of mutual respect, dignity and good faith. This requirement means that both parties have certain rights, and equally, both have certain obligations.
For example, the healthcare provider is required to give the patient clear information about their state of health and the care available to them. The patient, for their part, undertakes to cooperate with the healthcare provider, disclosing any and all pertinent information regarding their health, and any medications they are taking. They are required to cooperate in their own healthcare as fully as possible, and to respect the rights of other patients.
