HIV prevention: U=U, Undetectable = Untransmissible

Every year, on 1 December, people around the globe commemorate World AIDS Day.

On World AIDS Day, the Department of Health and Social Care is launching a campaign based on the theme ‘Undetectable = Untransmissible’. A person living with HIV who is on effective treatment can achieve such low levels of the virus in their blood that it becomes undetectable. Under these conditions, they no longer transmit the infection — including during pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding or unprotected sex.

This campaign, which will run until the end of December 2025, and the accompanying actions aim to raise awareness and reduce prejudice and stigma surrounding people living with HIV.
