Less alcohol, more fun. Say no to one glass too many!
The Ministry of Health is relaunching its campaign: 'Less alcohol, more fun. Say no to one glass too many!'
Following its success in 2018, the Ministry of Health is relaunching its campaign against alcohol misuse to coincide with the start of Carnival. The campaign's main aim is to raise awareness among young people on consuming alcohol sensibly and in moderation.
"We need to promote healthy and rational behaviour towards alcohol consumption in young people by reinforcing a responsible attitude and responsible consumption", stresses Paulette Lenert, Minister of Health.
Incidentally, according to the EHIS (European Health Interview Survey) published in 2017, the median age at which people in the Grand Duchy have their 1st first alcoholic drink stands at 15.9 years (15.6 years for boys, and 16.6 years for girls). On a more positive note, only one 15-year-old in 7 said that they had been drunk at least twice in their life, which is the lowest rate in the EU. (Source: State of health in the EU, Companion Report 2019, European Commission + State of Health in the EU, Luxembourg Country Health Profile 2019).
Excessive alcohol consumption in adults is a major public health challenge in Luxembourg. Indeed, the percentage of adults who admit to binge drinking is one of the highest in the EU. At more than 1 adult in 3, Luxembourg is in third place after Denmark and Romania.
The harmful consumption of alcohol is the 2nd biggest cause of avoidable and premature death in Luxembourg
"Above all, it is essential to ensure that people approach alcohol consumption responsibly. I think most people are aware of the devastating effects of alcohol misuse. It affects long-term health and is an avoidable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, cancer, liver disease and even mental health issues", reiterates Ms Paulette Lenert.
The 'Less alcohol, more fun. Say no to one glass too many!' campaign runs awareness-raising initiatives for young people during the Carnival celebrations, and includes radio ads and videos shown on the big screen, on the tram and on social media. Breathalysers will be given out to young adults and others free of charge at the Carnival's main processions and balls.
