Healthcare professionals

The term 'healthcare professional' encompasses doctors as well as other providers of health care, such as nurses, physiotherapists and other healthcare professions.

Doctors are represented by peers on the Medical Board (Collège médical), which ensures that physicians comply with ethical and professional standards of care.

Veterinarians are represented by the Board of Veterinary Surgeons (Collège vétérinaire).

Other healthcare professionals are represented by peers on the High Council for Healthcare Professions (Conseil supérieur pour professions de santé). The Council is tasked with establishing a code of ethics and providing the Minister of Health and social Security with opinions when called upon to do so.

Doctors and other healthcare professionals have formed several associations to represent their professions and protect their interests.

The Association of Doctors and Dentists (Association des médecins et médecins-dentistes - AMMD) is open to all doctors and dentists in Luxembourg, and represents the profession on a number of national bodies, and particularly in its relations with the National Health Fund (Caisse nationale de santé - CNS), formerly the Union of Health Insurance Funds (Union des caisses de maladie - UCM).
