Administration of vaccines

In Luxembourg, vaccinations may be administered by various healthcare professionals, depending on their qualifications and applicable regulations.

• Doctors may prescribe and administer vaccines in accordance with the recommendations of the Superior Council for Infectious Diseases (CSMI). Vaccines included in the national vaccination program are available free of charge directly at the doctor's practice. Certain specific vaccinations, such as the yellow fever vaccine, are administered only at reference centers, notably the CHL Travel Clinic.

• Nurses may prepare and administer vaccines upon a doctor's prescription, in accordance with CSMI recommendations and provided that the prescribing doctor is available to intervene if necessary. Nurses cannot prescribe vaccines; determining the need for vaccination and issuing the prescription remain the responsibility of doctors.

• Midwives may, on their own initiative, administer the seasonal flu vaccine and/or a combined vaccine against whooping cough (pertussis), in accordance with CSMI recommendations.
