Inspection

In the event that such provisions are not being observed and correctly applied, the Division may demand corrective actions with immediate effect.

The frequency of inspections must be directly linked to the relative risk associated with each type of practice involving ionising radiation or sources.

Routine inspections

These inspections are part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and worker protection. Advance notice of such inspections is generally given.

However, if there are any doubts about ionising radiation sources being managed properly, inspections may also be carried out unannounced. Unannounced inspections must, however, only be carried out in justified cases and should not be the general rule.

Ad-hoc and additional inspections

In addition to the inspections planned in the inspection schedule, further inspections might also be needed:

  • following an unusual event such as a safety-related incident or accident;
  • following major changes to practice such as structural modifications (new type of radiation source, change in personnel etc.);
  • following complaints from staff or the public.

Primary and final inspection

The primary inspection or acceptance inspection encompasses the checks required for all standard inspections and also compliance with authorisation conditions.

The final inspection may be carried out if activities are permanently terminated and the authorisation suspended, especially at establishments where there is suspicion of the activation of material or a risk of contamination.
