Safety and security aspects

Regulations governing the possession of radioactive materials are designed to meet 2 separate aims:

• security or protection involves preventing the loss, disappearance, theft or misappropriation of radioactive materials;
• safety involves managing the radiation and contamination risks in order to ensure that there is no harm to human life or the environment.
