Medical imaging examination request
Medical imaging examination request form
With effect from 1 August 2019, the terms 'prescription' and 'medical prescription' no longer apply to a request for an imaging examination, as the decision on exposure is the responsibility of the administering physician.
The request for an examination must include the contact details and specialties of the requesting physician, be dated, be written in one of the administrative languages of the Grand Duchy and indicate the information necessary to justify the intended exposure, including the clinical indications, the purpose, any specific known and available circumstances of the envisaged exposure, including any pregnancy, and any medical imaging examinations previously carried out of relevance to the request.
To make it easier to adhere to the law, doctors who request medical imaging examinations are invited to make use of the form 'medical imaging request (Pdf, 600 Kb)'.
Guide to the Proper Use of Medical Imaging Examinations (in French – GBU)
There is a Guide to the Proper Use of Medical Imaging Examinations (in French), which is available to doctors to help them justify their actions.
It is a set of best practice guidelines aimed at both the doctors who request medical imaging examinations and those who are responsible for administering them.
This guide was prepared by the French Radiology Association and the French Nuclear Medicine Association.
- It is available free of charge on the internet.
- A smartphone/tablet app is also available.
A useful guide for the requesting physician
The Guide to the Proper Use of Medical Imaging Examinations (GBU) is an invaluable tool for the requesting physician. It helps the doctor to choose the most appropriate examination based on the patient’s pathology.
If the doctor indicates a clinical situation, the GBU suggests a list of imaging examinations that could be prescribed for diagnostic purposes. The appropriate examinations are listed together with indication recommendations and the associated exposure level.
The requesting physician is not obliged to strictly apply the recommendations in the GBU, but should strive to refer to it as far as possible.
A useful guide for the requesting physician
The Guide to the Proper Use of Medical Imaging Examinations is an invaluable tool, including for doctors who are carrying out medical imaging.
The decision to expose the patient is the responsibility of the administering physician, who must order the exposure if they consider it justified, or reject or change it otherwise.
Action plan for promotion of the Guide to the Proper Use of Medical Imaging Examinations
At the end of 2015, the Minister for Health and the Minister for Social Security adopted an Action plan to promote the recommendations regarding medical imaging prescriptions, specifically with the aim of reducing the number of unnecessary radiological examinations being carried out.
