Endometriosis

Endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological condition characterised by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the uterine cavity, leading to an inflammatory response and the formation of lesions and adhesions. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it affects around 10% of women of reproductive age worldwide, or nearly 190 million people.

The condition usually begins at menarche and can progress until the menopause. It is associated with a significant impact on quality of life, including physical, psychological and social repercussions.

It is also associated with impaired fertility. According to the WHO, it is found in 25 to 50% of women with infertility.
