Collection of veterinary antimicrobial sales and use data
Sales of antimicrobials for veterinary use
Wholesalers that have been authorised to sell and distribute veterinary medicinal products in Luxembourg must submit antimicrobial medicinal product sales data to the Directorate of Pharmacy and Medicines (Direction de la pharmacie et des médicaments - DPM) every year. This requirement is governed by European and national regulations, in particular Regulation (EU) 2019/6, Delegated Regulation (EU) 2021/578 and the Grand Ducal Regulation of 23 December 2022. With enforcement of this requirement, trends in antimicrobial use can be monitored, and actions and policies to reduce antimicrobial use can be implemented, thereby helping to protect public health.
Antimicrobial use in animals
All veterinarians who prescribe antibiotics – whether they are registered in Luxembourg, or providing a one-off service in the country – must file a monthly report on the quantities of antimicrobials prescribed and used on livestock.
This report must be filed using the Guichet.lu platform. Once filed, the report will be processed by the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (Administration luxembourgeoise vétérinaire et alimentaire - ALVA), and then forwarded to the Directorate of Pharmacy and Medicines for verification and control, before being sent to the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
Every year the EMA publishes its Antimicrobials Sales and Use (ASU) report covering the European market. This report can be used to compare trends across the different EU countries in order to support efforts to combat antibiotic resistance.
