Prescribing 'cascade'

The prescribing 'cascade' approach, or use of medicinal products outside the terms of the marketing authorisation (off-label), allows veterinarians to prescribe medicinal products for animals when there is no licensed veterinary medicine, or none is unavailable (shortage reported by the holder), to treat a particular condition.

The 'cascade' must only be used in exceptional cases, and under the direct responsibility of the veterinarian. The procedure is described in Articles 112 to 114 of Regulation (EU) 2019/6:

In food-producing animal species

By way of derogation from Article 106 of Regulation 2019/6, where there is no authorised veterinary medicinal product in Luxembourg for an indication concerning a food-producing animal species, the veterinarian responsible may, under their direct personal responsibility, exceptionally treat the animals concerned as follows:
