DASHBOARD: Foetal and infant mortality
Cause-of-death statistics reflect the main cause of death, codified in accordance with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10), produced by the World Health Organization (WHO). This framework ensures quality and international comparability of mortality data.
The Grand-Ducal Regulation of 20 June 1963 makes it mandatory to declare the causes of any death, of a resident or non-resident, that occurs in Luxembourg (de facto death). The declaration is made by means of a death certificate (general certificate, or special certificate in cases of foetal or neonatal death), filled in by a doctor. The full methodology can be found here (Pdf, 659 Kb). Dashboards for cause-of-death statistics are populated with validated data from the register from 1998 onwards.
Luxembourg's mortality data can also be viewed on the website of the statistics portal of the National Statistics and Economic Studies Institute of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Institut national de la statistique et des études économiques du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg - STATEC), the European Union Statistics Office (Eurostat), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
Data concerning foetal and infant mortality relates to deaths of foetuses and infants occurring in Luxembourg (de facto death). Foetal and infant mortality includes stillborn babies and the deaths of children before the age of one.
