Cause-of-death statistics

Cause-of-death statistics tell us about the primary or initial cause of a person's death.

The coding of causes of death is based on the World Health Organization's (WHO) International Classification of Diseases (ICD). This framework guarantees a certain level of quality and international comparability of mortality data.

The Grand-Ducal Regulation of 20 June 1963 makes it mandatory to declare the causes of death for all deaths occurring in Luxembourg. 

This declaration is made by means of a death certificate. The civil registrar will register the death in the records of the commune in which it occurred, and then send the certificate to the Health Directorate, who will use the data to publish the statistical tables on causes of death below.
