Vaccine coverage

Vaccine coverage in Luxembourg

Maintaining solid vaccine coverage is crucial to eliminating infectious diseases. It is an essential issue of public health and a matter of protecting all children and those around them.

Amendments to the vaccination schedule, in accordance with the recommendations of the Superior Council of Infectious Diseases (Conseil supérieur des maladies infectieuses - CSMI), lead to an increased need for knowledge of the evolution of children's vaccine coverage to assess the degree to which these new recommendations are being followed.

In the absence of a national vaccination register, vaccine coverage surveys are a vital assessment tool for any vaccination programme aimed at children aged between 25 and 30 months and living in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

The effects of a vaccination programme can be assessed by, amongst other indicators, the rate of vaccination uptake in the population and monitoring any side effects of the vaccines used. By assessing vaccine coverage rates, it is possible to:

  • Discover these infants' vaccination status;
  • Monitor changes in that status;
  • Identify any variation that could have an impact on the incidence of diseases that are preventable by vaccination;
  • Make proposals for subsequent adjustments to the national vaccination programme.

Luxembourg's vaccination programme is based on the recommendations of the Superior Council of Infectious Diseases (CSMI).
