Medicines
The reimbursement of medicines by health insurance in Luxembourg follows specific rules aimed at guaranteeing access to essential treatments while controlling costs.
Medicines can be dispensed either on prescription or over the counter under the supervision of a pharmacist.
A few rules to know
- A prescription is valid for three months (unless otherwise specified).
- Successive dispensing must be completed within six months of the first.
- If the duration is not specified, only the smallest package size will be reimbursed.
Third-party payment generally applies: you only pay the portion not covered by the CNS.
Reimbursement rates vary depending on the category of medication:
- 100% for medications with a specific therapeutic indication.
- 80% for most other medications.
- 40% for medications intended to treat minor conditions.
Medications not on the list are generally not reimbursed.
Medical devices and compression garments are also covered by health and maternity insurance.
