End of life

Death and funeral expenses

The funeral allowance is a lump sum financial assistance intended to cover the funeral expenses of an insured person or a co-insured family member in Luxembourg.

It is paid up to the amount of the expenses incurred to the person or institution that advanced the expenses, or directly to the funeral provider if a public body is involved.

Any remaining balance is paid to the spouse, children, father and mother, brothers and sisters (in that order) who lived with the deceased. This allowance also applies to stillborn children. A stillborn child is defined as a child born viable but not alive. A child is presumed to be viable if, according to the medical certificate, the pregnancy lasted more than 22 weeks from conception.

In the event of death during authorised treatment abroad, the CNS will contribute to the repatriation of the remains up to the same lump sum.
