Survivor's pension
In the event of the death of an insured person or a recipient of an old-age or disability pension, a survivor's pension may be granted by the National Pension Insurance Fund. This benefit is part of the survivor's benefits.
Potential beneficiaries
The following persons may be eligible for a survivor's pension, provided they meet the eligibility requirements:
- The surviving spouse
- The surviving partner (in the context of a recognised partnership)
- The divorced spouse
- The former partner
- Parents in the direct line or collateral line up to the 2nd degree, as well as relatives in the direct line up to the 2nd degree
- Orphans
The survivor's pension is granted without distinction of sex, in accordance with the principle of equal treatment between men and women.
Clarification on civil partnerships
The term ‘partner’ refers to persons in a civil partnership that has been officially registered in Luxembourg or abroad. A civil partnership entered into abroad must have the same legal effects as a civil partnership recognised in Luxembourg in order to be eligible for a survivor's pension.
