Recognition of the caregiver

If a person provides assistance and care on a regular basis, at least once a week, they may be considered, under certain conditions, as a carer.

This caregiver may be:

  • a family member;
  • a private individual;
  • a professional who is not part of an assistance and care network.

The AEC representative assesses whether this person is capable and available to provide the necessary assistance and care to the dependent person. If they can be considered as a carer, they undertake to provide assistance and care, either alone or in collaboration with a care and support network.

The AEC representative decides how the assistance and care will be divided between the carer and the care and support network.

If the carer is temporarily unavailable (e.g. due to illness or leave) or permanently unavailable, the dependent person can still call on a support and care network to ensure that their care continues.
