Stop smoking programme

The stop smoking programme aims to provide tailored support to anyone who wishes to give up smoking. This programme has been implemented by the Ministry of Health and Social Security and the National Health Fund (Caisse nationale de santé - CNS). It is available to anyone who has enrolled with the CNS.

Regular appointments with a doctor of your choice

With the stop smoking programme, you can attend regular appointments with a doctor of your choice for a period of 8 months.

Stop smoking medication can be prescribed during the course of treatment, if necessary.

In order to register, you must sign an informed consent form during the first appointment with the doctor in question.

Stages of the programme and reimbursement

  • For the 1st appointment, the doctor includes the E40 code on the invoice, the full cost of which is covered by the CNS. The patient then sends this statement of fees directly to the CNS for reimbursement.
  • After the last appointment 8 months later, the doctor includes the E45 code on the invoice, which is also fully covered by the CNS. This code is compulsory for a patient to claim their entitlement to reimbursement of the cost of their medication.
  • The E45 statement of fees must be sent alongside medication receipts to the Health Directorate for approval. The file will be forwarded to the CNS for reimbursement.

Other medical appointments are reimbursed as normal.

Reimbursements for half the cost of stop smoking medication – up to a maximum of €100 – can only be claimed at the end of the programme (after 8 months).
