Illegal substances
As occupational health covers all work-related health issues, it also encompasses the use of alcohol and drugs, as well as medicinal products that affect vigilance.
The detrimental effects associated with alcohol and drug abuse in the workplace are very diverse, and include:
- an increase in the number and severity of workplace and commuting accidents;
- a decline in efficiency;
- a decline in productivity;
- social and economic costs associated with absenteeism;
- deterioration of the work environment (aggressive behaviour, trauma linked to alcohol);
- and even dismissal.
To shoulder its responsibilities under the law, as mentioned, the employer has the right to prohibit the consumption of alcohol and drugs in the workplace.
In matters of responsibility, it is not only the employer who is concerned: the employee is also responsible, to the best of their ability, for their own safety and that of others.
They therefore have a duty to immediately notify the employer or designated worker, if they suspect that alcohol or drugs are being consumed.
