Cocaine

Cocaine is obtained by chemically processing the leaves of the coca plant. This plant grows in the tropical part of South America and on the Indonesian islands.

Forms

Cocaine generally takes the form of a white powder. It can be snorted, injected intravenously or smoked. It is sold in small quantities, in sachets or wraps.

Effects

Cocaine constricts blood vessels, and causes irregular heartbeat and high blood pressure.

It creates a sensation of energy and performance. The user experiences a sense of reduced tiredness, pain and hunger. This euphoric phase can be followed by a phase of anxiety and unease.

Risks

Cocaine use can quickly lead to a state of dependence. Regular use can result in severe anxiety, hallucinations, paranoia and depression.

Dangerous combinations

Consuming cocaine together with alcohol or other psychoactive substances is dangerous.

It is particularly dangerous to mix cocaine with other stimulants such as ecstasy: this increases the risk of overdose.
