Conditions under which abortions may be carried out
What are the conditions under which an abortion may be carried out in Luxembourg?
In Luxembourg, a pregnancy may be terminated if:
- an abortion is carried out before the end of the 12th week of pregnancy, or before the 14th week of amenorrhoea,
- the pregnant woman has consulted a specialist in in gynaecology and obstetrics at least 3 days prior to having a termination (certificate of pregnancy),
- the pregnant woman has understood the information given by the specialist prior to the termination (the various available abortion methods, the risks, side effects, the list of institutions authorised to carry out abortions, etc.),
- the abortion is carried out by a physician specialising in gynaecology and obstetrics, licensed to practise in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg,
- the abortion is carried out in a hospital or other licensed institution.
Medical abortions may be carried out by a physician who is not specialised in gynaecology and obstetrics. They must be licensed to practise in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Medical abortions may be carried out by that physician in their own clinic. However, the physician must have an agreement with a hospital with a gynaecology-obstetrics department that provides a permanent emergency service.
