Birth allowance

The purpose of a birth allowance is to protect both your and your child's health by providing regular checkups both during your pregnancy and up until the child is 2 years old.

The allowance is divided into three instalments:

  • prenatal allowance,
  • actual birth allowance,
  • and postnatal allowance.

Prenatal allowance

Prenatal allowance is the first instalment of the birth allowance. Prenatal allowance is paid, together with the actual birth allowance, once the child is born.

To obtain this prenatal allowance, you must:

  • be domiciled in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg at the time of your last prenatal medical examination,
  • have undergone five medical examinations with a gynaecologist at fixed points during your pregnancy,
  • have had a dental medical examination.

Procedure

When you first visit your gynaecologist, you will be given the prenatal allowance application form, and the maternity booklet.

Each time you visit, the gynaecologist will fill in, sign and stamp your form.

The dentist will do likewise.

Once the form has been filled in by your dentist and your gynaecologist, you need to go to your local administrative office so that they can certify your place of residence on the form.

Having completed these steps, you can then send the completed form to the Children's Future Fund (Caisse pour l’avenir des enfants - CAE).

The actual birth allowance

The birth allowance and prenatal allowance are paid, together, after the child is born.

In order to obtain the birth allowance, you must:

  • be domiciled in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg at the time of the birth,
  • have undergone a postnatal gynaecological examination between 2 and 10 weeks after birth,
  • have given birth in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, unless exceptional circumstances apply.

A Luxembourg resident who adopts a child is also entitled to birth allowance.

Procedure

You must send an extract of the birth certificate, along with the birth allowance application form, to the CAE.

The birth allowance application form will be given to you by the municipal administration office of your child's place of birth when you declare the birth to the civil registrar.

The gynaecologist must fill in the form at the time of your postnatal examination.

Once the form has been filled in by your gynaecologist, you need to go to your local administrative office so that they can certify your place of residence on the form.

Having completed these procedures, you can send the completed form and an extract of the child's birth certificate to the CAE.

Postnatal allowance

Postnatal allowance is the third instalment of the birth allowance. It is paid after your child turns 2.

In order for the postnatal allowance to be paid, your child must:

  • have been raised in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg up until the age of 2,
  • have had the 6 medical examinations at the times stipulated by the Grand-Ducal Regulation.

Procedure

You will be given the form at the maternity hospital after you give birth, or when you first visit the paediatrician.

Once the form has been filled in by the paediatrician, you need to go to your local administrative office to get your place of residence certified on the form.

Having completed these steps, you can then send the completed form to the Children's Future Fund (CAE).
