ANTIBIOTICS: use them wisely, keep them effective

The Ministry of Health along with the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development is marking European Antibiotic Awareness Day, a public health initiative taking place every year on 18 November, by relaunching their awareness campaign under the slogan: 'Antibiotics, use them wisely, keep them effective!' during the month of November with a view to continuing to raise awareness among doctors, pharmacists, vets, farmers, pet owners and the general population of the ever-increasing risks linked to inappropriate use of antibiotics.

In order to tackle antibiotic resistance, it is essential to only use them when prescribed by an authorised health professional and to avoid self-medication. It is important not to share antibiotic treatment, to continue the course until the end, and not to keep them for future use. Preventive measures such as vaccination, hand washing and food hygiene are also vital to reduce the spread of infection.
