'Live without smoking'

The new smoking law that entered into force on 1 August 2017 follows the transposition of European Directive 2014/40/EU and sets out measures over and above the provisions of this Directive.

These additional measures aim to protect the health of children and non-smokers, and prevent children from smoking in the first place.

What has changed with this new law?

Smoking and vaping are banned...

in play areas.

This measure:

  • protects children from passive smoking;
  • requires adults to behave responsibly towards children and act as role models for them;
  • accustoms children to living in a smoke-free environment.

in any vehicle in the presence of minors under 12 years of age.

This measure:

  • protects children from the harmful effects of passive smoking;
  • requires adults to behave responsibly towards children.

in sports venues, when children under 16 years of age are playing sport.

This measure:

  • protects children from passive smoking;
  • makes adults accountable;
  • accustoms children to living in a smoke-free environment.

Alignment of legislation on electronic cigarettes with legislation on conventional cigarettes

This measure bans vaping in all places where smoking is banned.

Raising the legal age for the sale of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes from 16 to 18 years

This measure aims to prevent the uptake of smoking, which is a public health priority, as young people remain key targets for the tobacco industry.
