The new smoking law extends the 2006 law

The general ban on smoking in public places entered into force on 1 January 2014.

The law prohibits smoking here

You are now no longer permitted to smoke:

  • in cafés, pubs or bars;
  • in nightclubs;
  • in tearooms belonging to cake shops;
  • in restaurants, breweries, snack bars and any establishments where food may be served or consumed (already in force since 2006);
  • in shopping malls;
  • in covered facilities where sports or leisure activities are practised;
  • in premises for collective use belonging to establishments offering accommodation (hotels, hostels, etc.);
  • in any public places already covered by the smoking law of 11 August 2006.

The new smoking law extends the 2006 law

This new law will extend measures to prevent the uptake of smoking among young people, as well as protecting everyone from the harmful effects of passive smoking.

In 2006, Luxembourg adopted an initial law banning smoking in public places. However, smoking in nightclubs and cafés – outside the times of food being served – was still permitted.

This new law withdraws this permission and extends the ban to smoking in public places.
