Wise heads protect themselves!
Why?
1/3 of people hospitalised after falling off a bicycle suffer head injuries. Helmets can prevent up to 80 % of these injuries.
Who?
All cyclists, children and adults alike! Parents and adults, think of the example you set; children copy the way you behave.
When?
Always! Whether you are on a pavement, road or cycle path, for a short or long trip: a helmet is the only effective protection against head injuries.
How?
Choose a good quality, EC-certified (EN1078) helmet. Follow the instructions to adjust it properly to the size of your head. It should neither clamp nor move when you shake your head. Try it before you buy it.
Replace the helmet after a heavy impact.
The role of schools in ensuring helmets are worn
Studies have shown that younger children tend to wear helmets quite regularly. However, as children move into secondary education, they wear helmets considerably less.
With this in mind, it is essential that children at this age are reminded of precautionary measures. School is the ideal place for raising awareness among a large number of children on the importance of wearing a helmet.
Here are a few key messages and ideas on how to structure such a lesson. For more information on this subject, download the document in the 'Learn more' box below.
Ideas on how to discuss wearing a helmet with students
- Invite the children to bring in their own helmets on the day of the lesson.
- Ask who has had a cycling accident.
- Demonstrate how to wear a helmet correctly and point out common mistakes.
- Demonstrate the risks of wearing a helmet incorrectly.
- Emphasise the importance of taking care.
- Reiterate safety measures.
Key messages
- All accidents are unexpected and can happen to any of us.
- Helmets save lives.
- A helmet must be worn correctly for it to be able to protect you!
- Avoid accidents at all costs: be visible and take care. You're more vulnerable than they are!
