Cancer - National Plan 2020-2024 (extended to 2026)

In Luxembourg, approximately 1,100 people die of cancer each year (600 men and 500 women). Cancer is the leading cause of death in men, with around 32 % of deaths, and the second in women, with 26 % of deaths. The 2018-2023 government programme plans to continue the efforts made in the fight against cancer by the first National Cancer Plan (PNC) 2014-2018. The second Luxembourg plan, which seeks to consolidate the actions to combat cancer already under way (PNC2 2020-2024) and has been extended to 2026, was prepared according to the recommendations of the 2018 coalition agreement, and it follows the recommendations of the European Partnership for Action Against Cancer (EPAAC) and the strategy proposed for an action plan stipulated by the World Health Organization (WHO).

With the cross-functional theme of patient support, the main priorities of the PNC2 2020-2024 are the digitalisation of data exchanges and expansion of the country's information systems, implementation of modern genetics and molecular pathology through the development of the National Human Genetics Centre (CNGH), structuring of oncology into skills networks, the development of translational oncology research, and recognition of the central role and missions of the National Cancer Institute.
