Dental amalgam - National Plan 2023

National plan for the gradual reduction of the use of dental amalgam

Pursuant to Article 3 of the Law of 16 May 2019 on certain implementing measures and the penalties of Regulation (EU) 2017/852 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 May 2017 on mercury, the Health Directorate has established, in cooperation with the sector concerned, a national plan relating to the measures to be applied to gradually eliminate the use of dental amalgams.

Objectives

The plan's objectives are:

  • lifelong prevention of tooth decay,
  • easy access to treatments with mercury-free materials,
  • objective communication on the risks and alternatives to reduce the use of dental amalgam, and
  • professional management of amalgam waste to prevent contamination of the environment.
  • The plan also lays down measures to support its implementation and evaluation.
