Presentation and methodology

In 2014 and 2019, Luxembourg contributed to the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS).

EHIS is a broad-based observational study that looks at the general population.

EHIS is designed to measure:

  • health status (including disability),
  • health determinants,
  • the use of healthcare services and barriers to accessing them,
  • sociodemographic characteristics

of the European Union (EU) population aged 15 and over.

This survey is conducted in a coordinated manner across countries, which results in a high level of comparability between all Member States.

It is a compulsory survey (with strict controls of the form and content of the questionnaire) for EU Member States (Commission Regulation (EU) No 141/2013 of 19 February 2013 and Commission Regulation (EU) No 2018/255 of 19 February 2018), managed by Eurostat.

The survey was conducted in Luxembourg in 2014 and 2019 with the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) on a sample of over 4,000 people, representative of the general population aged 15 or over and living in Luxembourg outside of institutions.

The first wave of EHIS was carried out between 2006 and 2009 in 17 EU countries voluntarily participating, plus Switzerland and Türkiye.
The second wave took place between 2013 and 2015 in all 28 EU Member States, plus Iceland and Norway. Other countries have partially adopted the study's methodology in their own national health surveys (e.g. Switzerland and Türkiye).

The third wave took place in 2019 across all EU Member States.

Following the 2019 wave, the European Health Interview Survey is planned to take place every six years.
