Breastfeeding

Scientific health authorities agree that breastmilk is the best possible food for infants, giving them all the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development. However, though breastfeeding is the natural way of feeding babies, not all mothers have the same opportunities and facilities to begin – or continue – breastfeeding their child.

The ALBA survey (ALimentation de nos BAbies – Feeding our Babies) is carried out on a regular basis (2004, 2008, 2015). This study provides an overview of the situation of baby feeding in Luxembourg. It analyses the differences that exist in relation to baby feeding habits across the population, on the basis of demographic and socio-economic health indicators, and environmental circumstances surrounding maternity or the mother's working conditions. On the basis of this scientific evidence, the study is able to make recommendations on how to improve the situation.

The promotion of healthy baby feeding is an integral part of the national GIMB (Gesond iessen, méi beweegen) programme. These recommendations also help to define target areas for action to promote a healthy and balanced diet for all babies.
