Research
In Luxembourg, health research takes place in both the public and private sectors. Below are the details of the main parties involved in health research in Luxembourg, the sources of funding, the national bodies which protect citizens involved in research projects and the data collected.
Parties involved
In Luxembourg, health research is conducted by the following organisations:
- Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), formerly the Centre de recherche public de la santé (CRP-Santé).
- Integrated Biobank of Luxembourg (IBBL), which has been taken over as an autonomous entity by the newly formed Luxembourg Institute of Health.
- Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST), which has been operating since 1 January 2015, was formed by the union of the state-sponsored research centres Gabriel Lippmann and Henri Tudor.
- the University of Luxembourg conducts health research, notably in the field of biomedicine. It is made up of multiple research groups, each of which carries out research projects and scientific activities.
- the National Health Laboratory (Laboratoire national de santé - LNS) is charged with tasks in the area of public health, including the study of epidemiology and hygiene. The LNS conducts research in certain disciplines relating to public health.
- hospitals and clinicians carry out clinical research aimed at improving treatments or diagnostic methods.
- medical societies also support research projects in their own particular fields, such as cardiovascular disease.
- foundations propose or carry out research projects. Examples include the Cancer Foundation, and the Cancer and Blood Research Foundation.
Funding
Research projects are funded in a variety of ways, from both the public and private sectors:
- the Ministry of Research funds around 60 % of expenditure on research;
- the Ministry of Health and Social Security, and the Ministry of Sport also fund research projects;
- the State finances the construction of research buildings;
- the National Research Fund finances research projects based on calls for projects, assessed by foreign experts.
