Beware of falls
As we age, the risk of falling is more likely due to certain factors, such as:
- lack of flexibility and balance;
- failing eyesight;
- an unsuitable environment, etc.
Take preventive action
A few little changes can help prevent falls.
- Eliminate the risk of slipping by putting non-slip mats under your rugs and a rubber mat in your shower or bath. Don't wax wooden floors and take care on wet floors.
- Have supports installed: lay furniture out along walls, making sure that it is stable, and install bars and handrails in the bathroom, in the WC, on the stairs, etc.
- Keep passageways clear and remove any objects you often knock into.
- Make sure there is adequate lighting.
- Wear shoes that support your ankles, with non-slip soles.
- Put a phone on your bedside table.
- Get your eyesight and hearing checked regularly.
- Get regular exercise.
Limit falls by not putting anything high up
- Reorganise your storage space so that everything is within easy reach (bookcases, cupboards, kitchen cabinets, etc.). And if you have to have something high up, ask someone to help.
- Check that the stool or stepladder is stable and take your time.
- Never climb higher than 2 or 3 steps and ensure that you are holding on with your hands.
- After a certain age, leave the tiling to someone younger!
Consult your doctor
If you fall regularly, consult your doctor to check whether:
- you can see properly;
- your shoes are suitable;
- you are suffering from poor balance;
- you are suffering from a drop in blood pressure.
Consult the directory to find your nearest doctor.
