Natural salts used in laboratories

  • These are nitrates, acetates and oxides of uranium, uranyl or thorium, and radium nitrates and chlorides.
  • These radioactive salts were once used in chemistry classes, particularly for practical experiments.
  • They may still be found in old jars in the attics and cellars of schools and universities. They may also still be lurking in laboratories, and in the homes of people who have set up their own home labs.

Low radiation risk

In most cases, these radioactive objects emit low doses of radiation. This radiation is not enough to make objects around them, or those who come into contact with the source, radioactive.

There is a risk of contamination if the object is handled without care.
