What is it?

Risks

Addiction

  • Even though they are designed to help people quit smoking, they contain nicotine and can maintain or cause addiction if misused.

Common side effects

  • Mouth or throat irritation
  • Hiccups
  • Nausea, stomach ache
  • Jaw pain (especially if chewed excessively)

Incorrect use

  • If chewed too quickly or swallowed, this may cause abdominal pain or reduce the effect of the nicotine.

Contraindications

  • Caution should be exercised in people with cardiovascular problems, stomach disorders or pregnant women (unless advised by a doctor).

Possible overdose

  • Using too much gum in one day can cause symptoms of overdose (dizziness, nausea, palpitations).
