Practical tips to help you succeed

  • Eat fruit and vegetables every day.
  • Avoid snacking between meals.
  • Eat 3 meals a day and avoid fatty and sugary foods.
  • Drink water if you feel the urge to smoke.
  • Avoid drinking strong coffee or tea.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation.
  • Chew sugar-free gum if you get the urge to smoke a cigarette.
  • Do 30 minutes of physical activity each day.
  • If necessary, learn some relaxation exercises.
  • Make sure you get regular and sufficient sleep.
  • Decide on the day when you will stop smoking and talk to your family about it: 31 May (World No Tobacco Day), 1 January or your birthday.
  • Remove any ashtrays and cigarettes from your home.
