Stress

Definition

Stress is a state of worry or mental tension caused by a difficult situation. It is a natural human response that drives us to rise to challenges and deal with the threats we face in our lives. Everyone experiences some degree of stress.

But everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. Methods of adaptation and the symptoms of stress vary from one person to the next.

Too much stress can lead to physical and mental problems. Learning to manage stress can help us feel less overwhelmed, and promotes our mental and physical well-being.

Stress can occur if we feel that we are being overworked or underworked, but also if we feel that the conditions required for us to fulfil or duties are insufficient.

Stress can impact all physiological processes. A certain amount of stress is essential for survival.

Too much stress or insufficient stress is harmful.

Stress at work can occur if we feel that:

  • our biological and/or psychological needs are not being satisfied;
  • our objectives cannot be achieved, because appropriate responses prove impossible;
  • transparency is lacking;
  • future outcomes are unpredictable;
  • we lack influence.

There is a difference between what an employee can and has to do, and what they want to or can or believe they can accomplish.
