Med Safety Week 2022
MedSafetyWeek runs from 7 to 13 November. The purpose of this global campaign launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) is to raise public awareness about the safety and proper use of medicines.
This year's global campaign involves medicines regulators in 82 countries, and focuses on the key role of every healthcare professional, patient and caregiver to report suspected adverse reactions and to contribute to the safer use of medicines. All medicines can cause side effects in certain patients, and that's why measures are in place to continuously monitor their safety before they are put onto the market. The purpose of this safety monitoring is to obtain more information on known side effects, as well as finding out about any new ones.
In Luxembourg, the following regulatory authorities manage reporting of side effects:
- the Division of Pharmacy and Medicines and the Health Directorate (Direction de la santé);
- the Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre at Nancy.
For MedSafetyWeek 2022, the Health Directorate has chosen Luxembourg's pharmacists as ambassadors of medicine safety to support the awareness campaign.
The campaign has set up the following communications initiatives:
- posters displayed in pharmacies;
- a social media campaign;
- a campaign briefing for pharmacists and distribution of badges identifying them as ambassadors of medicine safety;
- a press release.
Further information is available on the Health Directorate's pharmacovigilance work at www.sante.lu/dpm.
