Stop the germs!
Simple and effective measures to protect ourselves!
Contagious diseases such as the flu, colds, bronchitis and other respiratory infections are more common when the weather is cold and dry.
Modes of transmission
The 2 main modes of transmission of infections (viruses and bacteria) have been identified as:
- airborne: spreading respiratory droplets from an infected person through the air by coughing, sneezing or spitting.
- contact with a person carrying a respiratory infection, namely:
- through contact with hands contaminated by infected droplets or secretions (for example: when shaking the hand of an infected person);
- through physical contact with an infected person (for example, when hugging them);
- through contact with contaminated objects or surfaces (for example: toys, door handles, worktops, etc.).
Hygiene measures
It is therefore essential to remind the general public of the basic hygiene measures they should follow to limit the risk of spreading infections:
- wash your hands for 30 seconds with soap and water, several times a day.
- if you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the crook of your arm.
Information materials
Posters, stickers and leaflets have been produced for adults and children. These will be distributed in a mailshot to doctors, pharmacists, hospitals, health and social welfare centres, care centres, nursing homes, public and communal administrations, as well as schools, nurseries and daycare centres.
