When you smoke next to a non-smoker, they smoke too!

Combating passive smoking

The fight against passive smoking is a hot topic in political and public debate. And with good reason! Exposure to tobacco smoke is not only a nuisance, it also seriously damages health.

Scientific studies show that people who are exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to develop lung cancer and suffer from cardiovascular disease, asthma and respiratory tract infections than non-smokers who are not exposed. Research shows that just half an hour of exposure to tobacco smoke is enough to weaken the heart of a non-smoker.

To change social attitudes towards passive smoking, the Health Department has launched the campaign ‘When you smoke next to a non-smoker, they smoke too’. The aim of this campaign is to encourage smokers to respect non-smokers and to raise awareness of the harmful effects of passive smoking among both non-smokers and smokers.

Actions: 2 commercials + posters

To achieve this goal, between late June and early July 2006, two television commercials, bus shelter advertisements, posters displayed in public places and magazine advertisements illustrated the quantities of cigarettes to which a non-smoker is exposed when living with a smoker.

Thanks to a radio advert broadcast in Luxembourgish and Portuguese, which highlights the positive atmosphere of a smoke-free environment, smokers' respect for non-smokers is becoming a reality.
